Ashwagandha is one of the most wonderful herbs I have come across in my life. The herb can be taken in small quantities for a long time which would have a profound impact on our health and mind. Here, I have focused on the key medicinal uses of taking it, in what dosages it should be taken and the benefits we get by taking it.

About Ashwagandha
In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is considered as one of the wonder herbs. It is a healing herb available extensively in India. It has been used for more than thousands of years. Popularly called as “Indian Ginseng”, it is still regarded as a powerful aphrodisiac.

The roots have high medicinal properties and are dried, powdered and used as medicine.

Common and Botanical names
The name Ashwagandha has its origin in Sanskrit, which  means “horse’s smell”. The name has originated from the odor of its root which resembles that of a sweaty horse. Ashwagandha belongs to the species called somnifera, which means “sleep-inducing”.

The Botanical name of Ashwagandha is Withania somnifera and belongs to the family Solanaceae. The common names of the herb are Amukkara in Tamil, Winter Cherry, Asagandh, Pennerugadda, etc.

Those who prefer to consume the herb in powder form, you can take about a half teaspoon of the powder and mix it with a quarter tumbler of warm milk and consume it. This can be taken twice daily. In India, IMPCOPS is very famous and provides very high quality of the herb in powder form.

Ashwagandha Root Powder

In Capsule form

Those who do not like the bitter taste of the powder, can take the herb in powder form. You can take about 2 capsules twice a day after food in the morning and night. In India, Himalaya is very famous in selling such capsules.

In Lehyam form

Ashwagandha Lehyam is very commonly available in all country shops (Naatu kadai). They grind the Ashwagandha powder, mix with ghee and store in a bottle. This can be stored and used regularly.

Dosage of Ashwagandha
To increase sexual power

Take one spoon of Ashwagandha Lehyam or half a spoon of the powder or 2 capsules twice daily for about a month. You will notice a remarkable difference in the sperm quality, quantity, sexual power and the ability to last longer.

To Rejuvenate the Body and nerves

Mix half a spoon of Ashwagandha powder, honey, sugar candy and ghee and consume it after food. You can also mix Ashwagandha with Tribula powder and consume daily. After taking the medicine, talk a tumbler of warm milk.

To maintain the youthfulness and to stop aging

Mix half a spoon of Ashwagandha with Amla juice and consume daily. It helps you to maintain the youthfulness and remain young.

How long you need to take to realize its benefits
The dosage and time period depends on the level of damage present in the body and age. However, for adults, benefits can be realised when taken regularly for a week. Adults are advised to take the medicine for atleast 3 to 4 week’s continously to realise the full benefits. For people over 40, Ashwagandha needs to be taken regularly for about 3 and 6 months.

In case you plan to take it for a prolonged time or througout your life, take the medicine for about 6 weeks and then take a break for about 10 days before starting next dosage.

Alternatively, you can take regularly on alternate days throughout life.

Precautions

Ashwagandha does not produce any adverse side effects when taken in prescribed dosage.
Pregnant women when taken has adverse effect on the foetus.
Sufficient human studies have not been done with Ashwagandha. Hence the side effects of consuming it for a longer period is not known. However, there has been one report that Ashwagandha can stimulate the thyroid and lead to thyrotoxicosis in some people when taken in excess quantities for a prolonged period.
Patients suffering from high blood pressure, stomach ulcers are advised not to take the herb.
